Growing the Right Way: What Our First Full Year as People 1st Realty Has Taught Us

When we officially launched People 1st Realty in late 2024, growth was never the primary goal.

That might sound strange coming from the CEO of a real estate brokerage, especially in an industry that often measures success by Agent count, deal volume, and market share. But from day one, our focus has been on how we grow, not just how fast.

Now, as we reflect on our first full calendar year as People 1st Realty, I find myself less interested in celebrating numbers for the sake of numbers, and more interested in what those numbers actually represent.

Because growth without intention doesn’t build longevity. And growth without standards doesn’t build trust.

Growth That Means Something

Yes, we’ve grown.

We’ve supported more families. We’ve expanded our Agent base. We’ve increased overall production. We’ve expanded into new markets and invested in long-term infrastructure, including our headquarters.

But those milestones matter to me for one reason only: they reflect how people are showing up, not just how many people are involved.

Real estate is not a volume game. It’s a people business.

Every transaction represents a family, a future, a major financial decision, and often a deeply emotional moment in someone’s life. If growth comes at the expense of professionalism, preparation, or integrity, it’s not progress - brand it’s erosion.

Why We’ve Chosen to Grow Intentionally

One of the hardest decisions for any Brokerage is choosing not to grow as fast as it could.

There are always opportunities to add more Agents, expand faster, or prioritize scale over substance. We’ve been intentional about resisting that pressure, because culture is fragile, and once it’s compromised, it’s incredibly difficult to rebuild. I'm so proud of the EPIC Culture (Energy, People 1st Approach, Innovation & Collaboration) that you rarely find in an entire Brokerage. Our Agents do the right things, for the right reasons, and are successful as a result.

At People 1st Realty, growth is filtered through a simple lens:

  • Does this raise the standard?

  • Does this strengthen leadership?

  • Does this support agents in building sustainable, professional businesses?

  • Does this improve the client experience?

If the answer isn’t yes across the board, we pause.

That doesn’t mean we’re slow to act, it means we’re deliberate.

At People 1st Realty, Professionalism Is a Practice, Not a Promise

One of the things I believe strongly in is the difference between talking about professionalism and practicing it.

Professionalism shows up in the unglamorous moments:

  • Being prepared when no one is watching

  • Following through when it would be easier not to

  • Having honest conversations instead of comfortable ones

  • Holding yourself accountable before blaming the market, the brokerage, or the circumstances

These are the standards we expect - not just from our Agents, but from our leadership team and from me as the CEO. After all, a true leader models the way.

Growth Is Not a Solo Sport

Another misconception in real estate is that strong Agents should be able to do everything on their own.

In reality, the Agents who grow the most sustainably are rarely operating in isolation. They’re surrounded by people who challenge them, support them, and hold them to a higher standard, not through pressure, but through shared expectations.

At People 1st Realty, we believe belonging isn’t about fitting in or being comfortable. It’s about being part of an environment that encourages growth, professionalism, and personal responsibility (while inevitably having some fun and and laughs along the way!)

That kind of culture doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built conversation by conversation, decision by decision.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to grow through Alberta and soon into Saskatchewan, our commitment remains the same:

  • Quality over quantity

  • Standards over shortcuts

  • People before process, without sacrificing professionalism

Growth will continue to come. But it will come because we’ve built something worth being part of.

And that, to me, is growth done the right way.
